I am proud of the Tuen Mun District was the first safe community in Hong Kong which was also designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the 72nd Safe Community worldwide in March 2003. In the past, we have experienced a number of serious accidents: construction accidents, gas leakage, and numerous traffic collisions on the Tuen Mun Highway; but most of these could have been avoided if people acted safely and the community provides for a safe environment.
I am pleased that the large enterprises and organisations participate in the Tuen Mun Safe Community Steering Community for the betterment of the community. This is a shared responsibility, everyone in the community should contribute to practise safety in their everyday life, set good examples for the younger generation so that they will think and act safe from a very young age. To reach this end, not only that we will launch promotional campaigns for high risk trades, we will also organise household, electrical and traffic safety programmes for the young and the public as a whole .
Tuen Mun District Council fully supports this meaningful project, and will assist in networking various government departments, schools, and social groups, in order to make sure the concept of safe community reaching every corner of the community.
The Honourable Lau Wong-fat, GBM, GBS, JP
Chairman of Tuen Mun District Council
