Smoke Free Environment

According to Sham Shui Po Community Diagnosis Study, 15% of residents smoked regularly and about 3% of students admitted they smoked occasionally. Not only smoking hazardous to health, people exposed to passive smoking were more likely to suffer from sore throats, colds, bronchitis and pneumonia. In the interest of reducing occupational hazard related to passive smoking in the workplace, protecting and improving the general health of citizens, different parties such as the Hong Kong government, Hospital Authority and Sham Shui Po District Council organized publicity and education work to promote smoke free environment. Below were some of programs / activities done by these parties.

Smoke Free Working Environment Pilot Scheme organized by SSP DC Healthy and Safe Community Steering Committee
Promotion activity organized by SSP DC Working Group on Medical & Rehabilitation Service by using exhibition board to echo ˇ§No smoking day on May 31 ˇ¨ in 2003

Roving exhibition on ˇ§No smokingˇ¨ organized by The Hospital Authority, Hong Kong
Environmental Protection

Green initiatives had been launched by SSP DC Working Group on Environmental Protection and Greening, local government departments and non-government organizations to increase public awareness on environmental protection. Over 10,000 participants took part in the programs.
Leaflet produced by Hong Kong Tobacco Office, Department of Health to advocate smoke free restaurant which was beneficial to both the staff and the consumers.
