Hong Kong Police Force, Social Welfare Department and non-government organizations all along played an important role on violence prevention and suicide prevention. Besides, Sham Shui Po District Council also addressed the issue by working closely with Hong Kong Police Force, government departments, community stakeholders to promulgate the message to Sham Shui Po residents. |

Hong Kong Police Force promulgates the message of crime prevention widely by means of television / radio broadcasting, posters and banners to increase citizens¡¦ awareness. The Good Citizen Award Scheme is hosted to encourage members of the public to report crime to the Police, to raise a "hue and cry" and to be prepared to act as witnesses. |

Besides, Sham Shui Po District Fight Crime Committee, Hong Kong Police Force, local government departments, community partners had collaborated programmes on crime prevention such as fight crime carnival, talk, anti-corruption wall painting for the public, students and youth regularly each year. Over 30,000 people had participated from 2002 to 2005. |

Social Welfare Department, non-government organizations provided counselling, supportive service and crisis intervention to assist the victims and the families. A series of publicity campaigns and various public education programmes to promote positive values towards life, strengthen family functions and enhance people¡¦s resilience in coping with stress for prevention of abuse and violence have been launched at different levels.
Anti-domestic violence ambassadors were trained to identify the high risk families, to promote family cohesion and harmony. The program was organized by the SSP DC Working Group of New arrival, Youth and Families and non-government organizations. More than 3800 no. of clients were benefit from the project. |

Prevention of Elderly Suicide
According to research (2001), the suicide rate among the elderly persons was the second highest in the world and was higher than the rate for the general population by several times. Nearly 70% of the elderly persons who committed suicide had revealed to their family members or doctors of their suicidal inclination but were ignored. The suicide ratio of economically inactive elderly persons to economically active elderly persons was 6:1. 60% to 70% of the elderly persons who committed suicide had suffered from chronic diseases; 22% had suffered from terminal illness. Higher suicide rates were found in more crowded districts or in those developing areas with limited community support services, such as Sham Shui Po, Kwun Tong, Wong Tai Sin, Kwai Tsing and Sai Kung.
In view of the seriousness of problem and ageing population in Sham Shui Po, Social Welfare Department, SSP DC Working Group on Elderly Service, non-government organizations strived hard to increase the public awareness on prevention of elderly suicide, elderly mental health through various programs and activities.

| ¡§To Honour and Appreciate the Senior¡¨: |

Citizens were invited to express their appreciation in an appreciation card which were sent to the old age home residents by students, volunteers and local elderly service units. About 20,000 participated in the activity. By showing concern, it was hoped that the elderly would feel being accepted, respect and life was meaningful. Thus, the spirit of respect and care for the senior would gradually build up and enhance in the community. |

VCD on elderly mental health was issued to public, non-government organizations, schools in 2003. This reminded public about the cause of elderly mental health problems and its management. If this group of elderly were identified as early as possible, the consequence such as depression, elderly suicide could be lessened.

The program had been launched since 1999.With the aims of encouraging a positive outlook among elderly, improving their quality of life and creating a caring community environment, the OEP of 2006 is launched under the theme 'Mastering Six Arts to Enrich and Enliven Your Elder Life'. Six arts, consisting of 'ritual, music, archery, chariot-riding, calligraphy and mathematics', were taught by Confucians as academic subjects in ancient China since Zhou Dynasty. Nowadays, they refer generally to various kinds of knowledge and skill. By encouraging elderly continuously explore their potential and acquire various kinds of knowledge and skill, the OEP enables them to give full play to their abilities, maintain their physical and psychological well-being and expand their social life. The spirit of respect and care for elderly is also advocated to facilitate elderly to age in a caring community and lead a fruitful and enjoyable life. |
