Occupational Safety

According to the CMC AED attendance (2002 to 2005), industrial accident was common amongst the attendants aged 25 to 44. For aged 45-64, industrial accident and domestic injury were the two most common causes. There were occupational safety programmes planned by Sham Shui Po District Council, The Occupational Safety and Health Council (OSHC), local government departments, non-government organizations, labour force union to raise the workers・ occupational safety and health awareness. Promotion of catering industry occupational safety and health

Catering industry was one of the most important service sectors in Hong Kong with employment of about 180,000. In year 2005, there were 9,247 industrial accidents recorded which ranked first among all industrial accidents. Cut injury, burns and scald due to contact with hot surfaces or substance, slip and fall etc. were the common causes of injury. These employees also prompted to occupational health hazards such as musculoskeletal disorders, heat stress, noise etc. Appropriate safety measures should be employed otherwise these employees might suffer from occupational diseases, body injuries. All along, the Labour Department, OSHC strived hard to increase the employees・ safety awareness through promotion and education. Moreover, SSP DC Healthy and Safe Community Steering Committee and the government departments work together to publicize the importance of catering industry safety and health e.g. to organize catering safety talk to the employees.

Promotion of construction industry occupational safety and health
Construction industry was a high risk occupation. According to the Occupational and Health statistics of Labour Department in 2005, construction industry accident ranked second among all the industrial accidents. The accident rate had been improved since the introduction of various safety management plans and security construction procedures during recent years by Labour Department and OSHC. Moreover, construction banners, posters were posted in the construction sites to remind the worker about work safety, major high risk hazards, safe working procedures, effective risk control measures.
No bad working habit
A program co-organized by The Federation of Hong Kong & Kowloon Labour Unions & OSHC to remind the workers to eliminate bad working habits which further enhance their occupational safety and health. Over 1,100 workers, residents participated.
Advocacy of :laborers right & interest;
According to Sham Shui Po Community Diagnosis Study, about 49% of residents being survey worked more than 50 hours a week. Activities to advocate laborer・s right & interest were held regularly for residents to increase their occupational safety and health awareness. About 3,000 people participated.
Youth occupational safety promotion
Domestic injury, industrial accident and sport injury were three causes for the youth aged 15-24 attended CMC AED.
 
Some students earned pocket money by taking part-time jobs after school and during summer. Nonetheless, most of them were without working experience. Also they were lack of sufficient occupational safety awareness and health knowledge for potential dangers at workplace. Occupational Safety and Health Council launched Youth safety programs every year to disseminate the message of workplace safety to the students. Activities included distribution of occupational safety and health kit, organizing seminars to reinforce the importance of work safety.
Other Publicity and Educational Programs
SSP DC Healthy and Safe Community Steering Committee, Sham Shui Po Commercial and Industrial Liaison, Occupational Safety and Health Council jointly organized occupational safety and health (OSH) carnival to increase residents・ occupational safety awareness. Over 5,000 residences participated. A 6-month program on publicity and education on OSH was organized by Sham Shui Po Commercial and Industrial Liaison. 4,000 number of residents participated.
