SSP Community Diagnosis Study

An extensive community diagnosis study was conducted in September 2002 to examine the root causes of the social problems and identify the factors affecting the health of the residents of Sham Shui Po District. The findings will enable SSP District Council to draw up measures according to the order of priority and gradually enhance the health and safety in the community. Based on the findings, recommendations were made as below:

Community facilities/district environment
    -to step up enforcement against litterbugs, promote civic education and launch the ˇ§Healthy and Clean Estateˇ¨ Programme;
    -to submit proposals to the Government on enacting laws to regulate the management of stand-alone buildings or publicizing the names of buildings violating hygiene regulations;
    -to arouse residentsˇ¦ awareness of safety and health issues through educational and promotional activities with a view to developing a culture of health and safety;
    -to submit proposals to the Government on prescribing maximum hours of work to reduce occupational accidents arising from long working hours
    -to target restaurants and hotels for promotion of occupational safety

Healthy Lifestyle
    -to alert the residents to pay attention to their body weight;
    -to encourage the residents to do more physical exercise;
    -to promote ˇ§no smokingˇ¨ programme
    -to raise residentsˇ¦ awareness of home safety.
