FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

Injury Surveillance and Analysis System (ISAS)
The population of Sham Shui Po district is 372,000 in 2005. The total number of AED attendance due to trauma was 22,261 (year 2002), 18,569 (year 2003), 19,901 (year 2004) and 19,154 (year 2005). Though the figures shown that there is a decrease in number of injury-related visits to AED, prevention of injury is still vital. Caritas Medical Centre has been using the Accident and Emergency Information Surveillance developed by The Hospital Authority to capture the injury data and its trends. It contains demographic data, provisional diagnosis, patient diagnosis, observation ward, emergency department follow up etc. However, it lacks other basic categories of data such as the nature, place and mechanism of injury, which are important factors for injury surveillance. The ISAS able to provide geographic mapping of injury, centralized the information, help to set priorities of injury prevention and also avoid duplication of resource. In order to have a more comprehensive database that provides sufficient information for the planning and implementation of injury prevention programmes and the monitoring of injury incidence, Caritas Medical Centre is planned to join the ISAS developed by Princess Margaret Hospital and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the coming year. We will continue to monitor the injury incidence, identified risk factors, set priorities and assists in planning and evaluation of injury prevention programs.

Web Site Development
Web site for Sham Shui Po Safe Community will be set up in the coming future. It aims to promote Sham Shui Po safe and healthy project as a whole and share the experience with other safe community networks locally and internationally.

Occupational Safety and Health for private nursing home staff
Sham Shui Po is an ageing community with 16.1% is elderly. Many of them are frail and need care and attention. Institutionalization is common if their families cannot take care of them at home. In Sham Shui Po, there are about 66 licensed private nursing homes. The daily work is carried out by personal care workers. In review accident statistics for welfare institutions from Labour Department in 2005, the total number of injury is 1,422 and the injury rate per 1,000 employees is 27:1. The common types of injury are injured while lifting or carrying, slip and fall, striking against or struck by moving /fixed objects and injured in workplace violence. So SSP DC Healthy and Safe Community Steering Committee has planned a safety program in 2006 to promote occupational safety and health for this group of workers. By increasing the workersˇ¦ safety and health awareness, the incidence of work related injury will be lessened.

Promotion Centre of Sham Shui Po Safe Community
With the funding support for Sham Shui Po District and venue support from West Kowloon General Out patient Clinic, the promotion centre has been set up in August 2006. It is situated in the central part of Sham Shui Po and is convenient for the residents to visit. Safety promotion leaflet, posters, projects done or to be carried out will be posted in the promotion centre to promote the concept of safe community to the public.
